March 22 UN Briefing

On March 22, 2013, undergraduates from the College of Public and International Affairs, attended briefings, courtesy of the Group Programmes Unit, at United Nations headquarters in New York.

Latest developments in implementation of the Responsibility to Protect were addressed by Ms. Mallory Mroz from the Office of the Special Advisor on the Prevention of Genocide.  Students were given an extensive history of the road to the Rome Statute and the International Criminal Court by Mr. Arnold Pronto, Senior Legal Officer from the Office of Legal Affairs, who also addressed some of the challenges of jurisdiction, prosecution, and universal application of the rule of law. Ms. Laila Shamji, Director of the Guided Tours Unit, formerly a UN Peacekeeper in Somalia, Timor l’Este, and Iraq, spoke to her experiences in these locations, placing particular emphasis on the multidimensional and multilateral nature of peacekeeping.
